Gabrielle Alexandre, Celles qui restent
About the video:
Filmed between the video studio of the School of Fine Arts of Marseille and the Haute-Saône department, this graduation short film features a group of teenagers confronting the boredom of rural life. Between dream and reality, they appear like colorful apparitions, interacting with the landscape. They invent their own leisure activities and bring enchantment to their village. The voice-over of a young girl reflects both the harsh realities of a declining region and the deep pride of having grown up there.
20'47", color, sound, 2024.
About the artist :
Born in 1999 in Belfort, Gabrielle Alexandre grew up in Haute-Saône (Franche-Comté), a region that quickly became the source of her artistic work and the focus of her research. After graduating from the École Estienne with a degree in Illustration in 2019, and from the Beaux-Arts of Marseille in 2022 and 2024, she settled in Marseille as a resident at the Ateliers Lautard. As a multidisciplinary artist, Gabrielle creates installations that reimagine the space of her native village, transformed through the distorting lens of a colorful and graphic imagination. Without shying away from sometimes brutal realities, her work expresses a desire to narrate and enchant an adolescence lived in a rural world. Her approach to volume begins with the creation of sets, where tapestries, wallpaper, textile prints, drawings, and structures combine. Depending on the context in which they are exhibited, these sets tell different stories. At times, they are used in film projects, manipulated by actors and altering the surrounding landscapes. Her puppet-like characters, representing teenagers, are always depicted in a state of inertia, facing the world as a terrain of boredom, waiting for adventure.
